He could play a mandolin and he could make people laugh. So, he became "Little Arlie" and joined his two brothers on the stage at school houses and movie theaters all over northeast Mississippi pickin'and grinnin' and clownin', recording and performing country music on radio and all the while, trying to balance show business with hard work in the fields.
When he was called into the ministry at age seventeen, he never lost his sense of humor but discovered that the gift of humor that God gave him could be used to build up believers and thus honor Christ.
In his performances he loves to use a quote of one of his pastor friends who once when introducing Arlis said:
"When the Lord called Arlis into the ministry, He probably ruined a Good Comedian in order to make a Mediocre Preacher!"
